Van Nelle is one of the world's most historic tobacco brands, originating in Rotterdam, Netherlands, in 1782. Originally founded as a shop for coffee, tea, and tobacco by Johannes van Nelle, the company became a pioneer in the global tobacco trade. The Van Nelle Factory in Rotterdam is today a UNESCO World Heritage site, reflecting its industrial importance.
While the brand has Dutch roots, its ownership shifted significantly during the late 20th century. In 1989, it was acquired by Sara Lee Corporation, which later sold its tobacco division. Today, the Van Nelle brand is owned and manufactured by Imperial Brands (formerly Imperial Tobacco), a British multinational conglomerate. While much of the production remains centered in specialized European facilities to maintain the specific 'zware' (heavy) and 'halfzware' (half-heavy) blends, it is distributed globally under the Imperial Brands portfolio.
