Originally established as a company specializing in ivory and wood accessories, it pivoted to plastic injection molding and eventually became a leader in ready-to-run model train sets. Their products are known for bridging the gap between entry-level hobbyists and serious collectors.

Over the decades, manufacturing has shifted significantly from the United States to Asia. Today, the vast majority of Bachmann's production occurs in specialized facilities in China. This transition was facilitated by its acquisition by the Kader Group, a major Hong Kong-based manufacturer that consolidated several global toy and hobby brands under its corporate umbrella.

Ownership of the Bachmann brand is currently held by Kader Holdings Company Limited, a publicly-listed entity headquartered in Hong Kong. This ownership structure places Bachmann alongside other legendary hobby brands like Hornby (under specific local licensing/production agreements in the past) and Graham Farish. The brand continues to maintain a strong presence in both the American market, via Bachmann Industries Inc. located in Philadelphia, and the European market.
