Bertolli is an iconic brand synonymous with Italian culinary heritage, founded by Francesco Bertolli and his wife Caterina in Lucca, Tuscany, in 1865. While the brand originally focused on olive oil, it has expanded significantly over the decades to include pasta sauces and spreads.
The brand's ownership is split across different sectors. The spread business, which produced this margarine, was sold by Unilever to the private equity firm KKR, which established Upfield as a standalone company to manage these assets. Consequently, while Bertolli holds an Italian soul, its margarine products are managed by a Dutch-based multinational and manufactured in various regional facilities across Europe to meet local demand. The olive oil products remain under separate ownership (Deoleo).
