A&W is a legendary brand in the fast-food industry, particularly famous for its signature root beer and 'burger family' menu. The brand originated in 1919 when Roy W. Allen opened a root beer stand in Lodi, California. This eventually led to the creation of the first drive-in restaurant chains in the United States and Canada.

In Canada, the brand has a unique status. Since 1972, A&W Food Services of Canada Inc. has operated completely independently from the American brand. While the American side of the brand has changed hands several times—currently owned by a group of franchisees—the Canadian operations are privately owned and headquartered in North Vancouver. The soft drink 'A&W Root Beer' itself is often manufactured under license by Keurig Dr Pepper in North America for retail distribution, while the restaurant-specific root beer is produced locally for each outlet.
