Pepsodent is an iconic brand of oral hygiene products with a long history. It was originally introduced in the United States in 1915 by the Pepsodent Company of Chicago. The brand became famous for its use of Irium as a cleaning agent and its extensive marketing campaigns. Over time, ownership and distribution rights for the brand became split globally.
In the mid-20th century, Lever Brothers (which later became part of Unilever) acquired the brand. Today, official ownership is divided: Unilever holds the rights to the brand in most international markets (including parts of Asia, Africa, and Latin America), while Church & Dwight has owned the rights to the Pepsodent brand in the United States and Canada since 2003.
Manufacturing takes place in multiple countries to serve local and regional markets. For international distribution outside of North America, the brand is managed under Unilever's extensive consumer goods portfolio, which is headquartered in the United Kingdom.
