Brand History and Origin

Green Giant is an iconic brand that originated in the United States. Its roots date back to the Minnesota Valley Canning Company, founded in 1903 in Le Sueur, Minnesota. The "Green Giant" character was actually introduced in 1928 to market a particularly large variety of peas. The character was so successful that the company eventually renamed itself Green Giant in 1950.

Ownership and Global Presence

Over the decades, the brand has seen several high-profile owners. It was acquired by Pillsbury in 1979, which in turn was bought by the British conglomerate Grand Metropolitan (later Diageo). In 2001, Diageo sold Pillsbury and Green Giant to General Mills. In 2015, General Mills sold the North American frozen and shelf-stable business to B&G Foods. However, the international rights, particularly for the UK and European markets, remained with General Mills for a significant period before various licensing and distribution agreements were established.

Manufacturing and Distribution

Today, Green Giant products like Original Crisp Niblets are produced in multiple countries to serve global markets. While the brand remains deeply associated with American agricultural history, the corn is grown and canned in various regions across North America and Europe, depending on the specific retail destination and seasonal harvests to ensure freshness and quality.
