Sharp Corporation began its journey in Tokyo, Japan, founded by Tokuji Hayakawa. The brand's name originates from one of its first major inventions, the 'Ever-Ready Sharp Pencil,' which launched in 1915. Over the following decades, Sharp transformed into a global leader in the electronics industry, pioneering mass production of televisions and radio sets in Japan.
In 2016, a significant shift in ownership occurred when the Taiwan-based Foxconn Technology Group (Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd.) acquired a majority stake in Sharp. This acquisition provided Sharp with the capital and manufacturing scale needed to compete globally in the display technology and consumer electronics markets. Today, the brand operates as a key subsidiary of Foxconn while maintaining its historical Japanese identity and headquarters.
Sharp products are manufactured across a diverse global network. While high-end research and certain specialized display technologies remain centered in Japan, the company utilizes manufacturing facilities in China, Malaysia, Thailand, and Europe to meet regional demand. This international footprint ensures that Sharp remains a household name in home appliances, office solutions, and visual systems worldwide.
