Ben & Jerry's began in 1978 in a renovated gas station in Burlington, Vermont, USA, founded by Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield. The brand is famous for its unique flavors with large chunks and swirls, as well as its social and environmental activism.
While the brand originated in the United States, it was acquired by the multinational British company Unilever in 2000. Under the acquisition agreement, Ben & Jerry's maintains a unique independent board of directors to oversee its social mission and brand integrity. Manufacturing takes place in several locations globally, including the original plants in Vermont, as well as Unilever's facilities in the Netherlands (for the European market) and Israel.
