Kalamata olives are a large, dark purple olive with a smooth, meaty texture, named after the city of Kalamata in the Peloponnese, Greece. Unlike many other olives, Kalamata olives are protected under the European Union's Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status, which ensures that olives labeled as 'Kalamata' meet specific quality and regional standards.

Traditionally, these olives are hand-picked to avoid bruising and are preserved in wine vinegar and olive oil, giving them a distinctively rich and smoky flavor. Production remains centered in the Messenia region of Greece, though the cultivar is grown globally. Ownership of specific brands varies, but the cultural and manufacturing heritage is strictly tied to Greek agriculture and various local cooperatives and family-owned enterprises.
