Rabobank, formally known as Coöperatieve Rabobank U.A., is a Dutch multinational banking and financial services company headquartered in Utrecht, Netherlands. It is a global leader in food and agriculture financing and sustainability-oriented banking. The brand originated from a merger of local credit unions focused on the agricultural sector in the late 19th century.
Unlike traditional public companies, Rabobank is a cooperative, meaning it is owned by its members rather than shareholders. It was formed by the merger of the Coöperatieve Centrale Raiffeisen-Bank and the Coöperatieve Centrale Boerenleenbank in 1972, creating the 'Raiffeisen-Boerenleenbank' (shortened to Rabobank).
Today, Rabobank operates in dozens of countries, focusing on international food and agribusiness (F&A) as well as retail and commercial banking in the Netherlands. Its ownership remains collective through its network of local cooperative banks, making it a unique entity in the global financial landscape with no single corporate 'ultimate owner' other than its membership base.
