Pilsner Urquell is widely recognized as the world's first pale lager, originally brewed in 1842 in the city of Plzeň (Pilsen), which was then part of the Austrian Empire and is now in the Czech Republic. The beer was created by Bavarian brewer Josef Groll at the 'Burghers' Brewery' (Měšťanský pivovar), which later became known as Plzeňský Prazdroj.

While the brand has changed hands several times over the decades—having been state-owned during the communist era and later part of the SABMiller portfolio—it was acquired by the Japanese conglomerate Asahi Group Holdings in 2017 as part of a divestment required for the AB InBev and SABMiller merger.

Today, Pilsner Urquell remains committed to its heritage, continuing to be brewed exclusively at the original brewery in Plzeň to maintain its distinct flavor profile characterized by Saaz hops and soft local water. It is exported globally and is a cornerstone of the Asahi Group's international premium beer portfolio.
