Pilsner Urquell is the world's first pale lager, originally brewed in 1842 in the city of Plzeň (Pilsen) in the Kingdom of Bohemia, which is now part of the Czech Republic. The brand revolutionized the brewing industry by creating a clear, golden-hued beer at a time when most beers were dark and cloudy. To this day, the brewery emphasizes its commitment to the original recipe and traditional methods, including the use of triple-decoction mashing and open-vessel fermentation.

The product is exclusively brewed in Plzeň, Czech Republic, using local ingredients such as Saaz hops and soft water from the brewery's own wells. This geographic exclusivity is a key part of the brand's identity and quality control. While many other beers are brewed under license around the world, Pilsner Urquell maintains that its distinct taste can only be achieved in its original location.

Historically part of the state-owned Plzeňský Prazdroj brewery during the communist era, the company underwent series of international acquisitions after privatization. It was previously owned by SABMiller but was sold as part of a divestment required for the AB InBev and SABMiller merger. Today, the brand and the Pilsenský Prazdroj company are owned by Asahi Group Holdings, a major Japanese multinational beverage corporation, which has maintained the brand's heritage as a premium global offering.
