Toblerone is one of the world's most recognizable chocolate brands, famous for its unique triangular peaks that mimic the Matterhorn mountain. Created in 1908 in Bern, Switzerland, by Theodor Tobler and Emil Baumann, the name combines the founder's surname with 'torrone', the Italian word for honey and almond nougat. For over a century, the product was exclusively manufactured in Bern, Switzerland. Starting in 2023, the brand's owner shifted some production to Bratislava, Slovakia, to meet global demand and increase cost efficiency.
Today, Toblerone is owned by Mondelez International, a global snack food giant. Due to strict 'Swissness' laws regarding the use of national symbols on products manufactured outside of Switzerland, the brand recently updated its packaging to replace the iconic Matterhorn mountain logo with a more generic mountain peak and removed the reference to Switzerland as the sole country of origin on certain batches. Despite these logistical and branding changes, the recipe remains consistent with its historical roots.
