Saturn, stylized as SATURN, is a prominent German electronics retail chain. It was founded in July 1961 by Friedrich Wilhelm Waffenschmidt and his wife Anni in Cologne, Germany. Originally known as 'Saturn Hansa', it grew to become one of the largest consumer electronics retailers in Europe, known for its massive floor spaces and extensive product selections.
In 1990, the brand was acquired by MediaMarkt, leading to the formation of the MediaMarktSaturn Retail Group. For many years, both brands operated as separate entities under the Metro AG umbrella. However, following a corporate demerger in 2017, the brand is now under the ultimate ownership of Ceconomy AG. Today, Saturn and MediaMarkt have increasingly integrated their operations, loyalty programs, and logistics to improve efficiency.
As a retailer, Saturn does not manufacture goods itself but sells products from global electronics manufacturers. Their private-label brands (such as PEAQ, KOENIC, ISY, and ok.) are manufactured by various third-party contractors across the globe, primarily in Asia and Europe, depending on the specific product category. The brand serves millions of customers through its brick-and-mortar stores and extensive online platforms across several European markets.
