The Observer is the world's oldest Sunday newspaper, founded in 1791 by W.S. Bourne. Since its inception, it has been a cornerstone of British journalism, known for its political stance and intellectual depth. In 1993, it was acquired by the Guardian Media Group (GMG), which brought it into the same stable as The Guardian daily newspaper.
The physical newspaper is primarily manufactured and printed in the United Kingdom within specialized printing facilities owned by or contracted to the parent group. While the digital presence is global, the print circulation remains centered in the UK and Ireland.
The Observer is owned by the Guardian Media Group, which is uniquely held by The Scott Trust Limited. The Scott Trust was created in 1936 to ensure the editorial independence of The Guardian in perpetuity and to safeguard the journalistic freedom of its publications. As of late 2024 and heading into 2026, there have been public negotiations regarding a potential sale of The Observer to the startup Tortoise Media, though the ultimate oversight currently remains with GMG and the Scott Trust.
