Bancontact payment system

Bancontact is Belgium's leading electronic payment system, providing both physical card payments and digital mobile transactions. It was established in 1989 through the merger of two competing systems, Bancontact and Mister Cash, to create a unified national payment infrastructure.

For decades, it operated as a domestic Belgian entity. However, in 2018, the company merged with the mobile payment provider Payconiq to form Bancontact Payconiq Company. The ownership structure is a consortium of major financial institutions, primarily Belgian banks, ensuring its stability and integration within the European financial ecosystem. While it remains deeply rooted in Belgium, its technology is increasingly integrated with international standards like SEPA.
