Chios Mastiha, or Masticha, is a unique natural resin obtained from the mastic tree (Pistacia lentiscus var. Chia), which grows exclusively in the southern part of the Greek island of Chios. This product is celebrated for its distinctive aroma and medicinal properties, holding a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status within the European Union.
The brand and its distribution are traditionally managed by the Chios Mastiha Growers Association, a cooperative established in 1938 to protect the interests of local farmers and ensure the quality of the resin produced. The production process remains artisanal, relying on ancient techniques for scoring the trees and harvesting the 'tears' that harden into mastic. Today, it is used in various forms including natural tears, chewing gum, and ingredients for cuisines and cosmetics worldwide.
