Alpro was founded in 1980 in Belgium as a subsidiary of the Vandemoortele Group. It pioneered the European market for plant-based alternatives to dairy, initially focusing on soy products before expanding into almond, oat, coconut, and fruit-based alternatives like the strawberry-banana yogurt substitute. The brand has grown from a niche health food provider into a mainstream global leader in the plant-based industry.
In 2009, Alpro was acquired by the American company WhiteWave Foods. In 2017, the global food giant Danone acquired WhiteWave Foods, bringing Alpro into its 'Essential Dairy and Plant-Based' (EDP) division. This acquisition solidified Alpro's position as a cornerstone of Danone's strategy to expand its plant-based portfolio worldwide. Today, while the brand maintains its headquarters in Ghent, Belgium, it operates as a key asset for Danone, reflecting the parent company's commitment to health-focused and sustainable nutrition.
Alpro products are manufactured in several specialized facilities across Europe, including major production sites in Wevelgem (Belgium), Kettering (United Kingdom), and Issenheim (France). The brand prioritizes local sourcing for its main ingredients and maintains rigorous environmental standards at its production plants, emphasizing carbon reduction and water conservation in the manufacturing of its plant-based yogurt and drink range.
