Red Baron is a prominent American brand of frozen pizza that has become a staple in households across North America since its introduction in 1976. Named after the legendary World War I flying ace Manfred von Richthofen, the brand was originally created by the Schwan’s Consumer Brands company, based in Marshall, Minnesota. Over the decades, it has established itself as a leader in the frozen food category, known for its signature crust textures and affordable price point.
Red Baron pizzas are primarily manufactured in the United States, utilizing large-scale production facilities such as the Schwan’s plant in Florence, Kentucky. While the brand has a massive footprint in the U.S. market, it also serves international markets, including Canada, where it is a popular choice in the frozen aisle. The production process emphasizes consistent quality and traditional pizza ingredients tailored for quick home preparation.
In early 2019, a significant shift in ownership occurred when the South Korean food giant, CJ CheilJedang, acquired a majority stake (approximately 70%) in Schwan’s Company. This acquisition integrated Red Baron into a global food network, with CJ CheilJedang acting as the ultimate owner from its headquarters in Seoul, South Korea. Schwan’s continues to operate as a subsidiary of the CJ Group, maintaining the legacy of the Red Baron brand while benefiting from global distribution and logistics capabilities.
