Joy by Jean Patou is one of the most iconic fragrances in history, originally created in 1930 by perfumer Henri Alméras. It was famously marketed as the costliest perfume in the world during the Great Depression, utilizing an exceptionally high concentration of jasmine and rose. The brand's fashion house was founded by Jean Patou in Paris, France.

Over the decades, ownership of the Jean Patou fragrance line shifted. In 2001, it was acquired by Procter & Gamble, and later, in 2011, it was sold to Designer Parfums Ltd. However, in 2018, the French luxury conglomerate LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy) acquired the Jean Patou brand. Under LVMH, the 'Patou' fashion label was relaunched, but the specific 'Joy' trademark for fragrances was leveraged for a new Dior scent, leading to the discontinuation of the original Jean Patou Joy perfume production. Current stock is largely considered vintage or legacy inventory.
