Specsavers is an international optical retail chain that provides a wide range of vision-related products and services, including prescription glasses, contact lenses, and hearing aids. Founded in 1984 by Doug and Mary Perkins, the brand began in the United Kingdom with the aim of making high-quality eyecare affordable and accessible to the general public.
Because Specsavers is a global operation, its manufacturing is decentralized. Frame production and lens glazing often take place in multiple large-scale laboratories across the United Kingdom, Europe, and Asia. Many of their brand-exclusive frames are manufactured in China and Vietnam, while specialized lens finishing is conducted closer to the regional markets they serve to ensure faster delivery times.
Unlike many global competitors, Specsavers remains a privately held company. It is still owned and managed by the founding Perkins family. The business model is unique, operating as a partnership where local opticians own and run their individual stores under the Specsavers brand, backed by the support and supply chain of the central organization based in Guernsey.
