Synsam is a leading optical retail chain in the Nordic region, originally founded in Sweden in 1968 through a collaboration between independent Swedish opticians. The brand has grown to be a dominant force in visual health, providing prescription glasses, contact lenses, and sunglasses across Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland.
Historically, Synsam outsourced much of its frame production to Asia. However, in a significant move toward sustainability and localized manufacturing, the company opened a large-scale production and innovation center on the island of Frösön in Östersund, Sweden, in 2022. While some components and specific lines are still manufactured internationally, a growing portion of their proprietary collections, such as 'Jämtö,' are manufactured in Sweden using recycled materials.
Today, Synsam Group is a publicly traded company on Nasdaq Stockholm. It is no longer owned by a single private equity firm such as CVC Capital Partners, which previously held a majority stake. The ownership structure consists of institutional investors and individual shareholders, maintaining its headquarters and strategic direction within Sweden.
