Maynards Bassett’s Wine Gums

Maynards Wine Gums are among the most iconic British sweets, originally created by Charles Riley Maynard in London in 1896. Despite their name, they have never contained alcohol; legal discussions at the time of their creation almost saw the product banned due to the name, but the sweets persevered to become a household staple.

Starting as a family-run business, Maynards eventually merged with Bassett’s in 2016 to form the Maynards Bassett’s brand. Today, the brand is owned by the multinational food conglomerate Mondelez International. While they were historically synonymous with their Sheffield manufacturing plant, production now takes place in multiple locations globally, including Turkey and the United Kingdom, to meet international demand while maintaining the traditional recipe and natural colouring.
