Skagen was founded in 1989 by Henrik and Charlotte Jorst, Danish immigrants who moved to New York. The brand was named after the Danish fishing village of Skagen and became known for its minimalist Scandinavian design ethos, characterized by slim profiles and clean dials.
While the brand's aesthetic remains rooted in Danish design principles, the manufacturing of Skagen products, particularly their electronic smartwatches like the Falster series, primarily takes place in China. This is consistent with the global supply chain strategies of major watch conglomerates.
In 2012, Skagen Designs, Ltd. was acquired by the Fossil Group, an American fashion designer and manufacturer based in Richardson, Texas. For the year 2025 and beyond, Fossil Group remains the ultimate owner, managing Skagen alongside other licensed and house brands in the global watch and wearables market.
