Zăganu is a prominent Romanian craft brewery that played a pivotal role in the resurgence of artisanal brewing within the country. Founded in 2013 by two entrepreneurs, Alexandru Geamanu and Laurentiu Banescu, the brand is named after the Zăganu Peak in the Cheia region of the Carpathian Mountains. The brewery is located at the foot of this peak in the village of Maneciu-Ungureni, Prahova County.
Producing a variety of unpasteurized and naturally fermented beers, Zăganu remains an independent craft operation. It is widely recognized for its commitment to traditional brewing methods without the use of additives or enzymes. The brand has expanded from its initial blonde and brown ales to include a wide range of styles such as IPAs, Red Ales, and Imperial Stouts, maintaining its position as a leader in the Romanian independent beer scene.
Ownership of the brand remains in the hands of its original Romanian founders through their company, Fabrica de Bere Bună. Unlike many large-scale commercial brands in the region, Zăganu has not been acquired by global beverage conglomerates, allowing it to maintain its craft identity and local production focus.
