Thorntons is a prestigious British chocolate brand with a rich history dating back to 1911 when Joseph William Thornton opened his first shop in Sheffield, England. The brand became a staple of the British high street, known for its Continental and Classics ranges, as well as its specialist toffee and fudge. For over a century, the company remained family-controlled and grew into one of the UK’s most recognizable confectionery names.
Manufacturing primarily takes place in Alfreton, Derbyshire, where the brand's main factory has been located for decades. While the company transitioned away from its own high-street retail stores to focus on supermarket distribution and online sales, the production standards for its boxed chocolates remain rooted in British heritage.
In 2015, the brand was acquired by the Italian confectionery giant Ferrero Group. Since then, the brand has been integrated into Ferrero’s global portfolio alongside brands like Nutella and Kinder, while maintaining its distinct British branding and heritage. The ultimate ownership resides with the Ferrero family through their holding company in Luxembourg and headquarters in Italy.
