Grimbergen is a historic Belgian abbey beer brand with a legacy dating back to the Premonstratensian Abbey in 1128. Known for its iconic phoenix logo, which symbolizes the abbey's resilience after being destroyed by fire several times, the brand has grown into a major international name in the specialty beer market.
Today, the production of Grimbergen is unique because it is split between two major global brewing giants depending on the market. The Carlsberg Group holds the international rights to the brand and produces it for various global markets, while the Heineken Group manages the brand and production specifically for the Belgian market.
In recent years, the brand returned to its roots with the opening of a new microbrewery inside the Grimbergen Abbey walls in Belgium, allowing for the small-scale production of experimental brews. However, the majority of the beer found in stores and bars worldwide is manufactured at large-scale breweries in France and Poland (for Carlsberg markets) or Belgium (for Heineken markets).
