The Moscow Mule is a classic cocktail traditionally made with vodka, spicy ginger beer, and lime juice, famously served in a copper mug. Contrary to its name, the drink did not originate in Russia; it was actually invented in the United States around 1941 at the Cock 'n' Bull pub in Hollywood. It was the result of a marketing collaboration between Jack Morgan (owner of the pub and producer of ginger beer) and John G. Martin (an executive at G.F. Heublein & Brothers who had recently purchased the Smirnoff vodka distillery).

Because the Moscow Mule is a generic cocktail recipe rather than a single trademarked brand, it is produced by hundreds of different beverage companies as a 'ready-to-drink' (RTD) canned or bottled product worldwide. Major brands like Smirnoff (owned by Diageo) and various craft mixers often produce their own versions. Manufacturing locations vary significantly depending on the specific brand purchased, typically being bottled in the country where the brand has its regional production facilities.
