Becel (known as Flora in various international markets) is a well-established brand of margarine and plant-based spreads. Originally developed by the Anglo-Dutch company Unilever in the 1960s, the brand was specifically formulated to be high in polyunsaturated fatty acids to promote heart health. It has since become a household name in the Netherlands and much of Europe.
In 2018, Unilever sold its entire spreads division to Upfield, a global leader in plant-based nutrition backed by the private equity firm KKR (Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co.). Today, Upfield operates as the ultimate owner, focusing on sustainable, 100% plant-based ingredients. Production remains heavily concentrated in Europe, with a major production facility located in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, serving the local and international markets.
