Founded in 1910, Gauloises is an iconic brand of French cigarettes traditionally known for their strong 'dark' tobacco and distinctive 'Caporal' flavor. The brand became a cultural symbol of France, famously associated with several historic figures, artists, and writers during the early-to-mid 20th century.
Originally produced by the French state-owned monopoly SEITA, the brand's production underwent significant changes following corporate mergers. After SEITA merged with Spain's Tabacalera to form Altadis, the brand eventually became part of the British multinational Imperial Brands. Today, while Gauloises maintains its French heritage and brand identity, the cigarettes are produced in various international facilities to serve global demand, as most French-based production facilities have closed over the last decade.
