The French passport is an official travel document issued by the French Republic to its citizens for international travel. It serves as proof of French citizenship and identity. These documents are produced under the authority of the Ministry of the Interior (Ministère de l'Intérieur) and are printed by the Imprimerie Nationale, the official state printing office of France.
The modern biometric passport, like the one shown, contains an electronic chip that stores the holder's photograph and fingerprints. The design features symbols of the Republic, including the coat of arms and various security watermarks and holograms intended to prevent forgery. Ownership and issuance remain strictly within the sovereign jurisdiction of the French Government.
