SweeTARTS were invented in 1963 by the Sunline Inc. company in St. Louis, Missouri. The candy was designed to provide the same tangy flavors as Pixy Stix and Lik-M-Aid but in a less messy, tablet form. Over several decades, the brand became a staple of American candy culture, known for its unique balance of sweet and tart flavors.
Traditionally associated with the Willy Wonka Candy Company brand, SweeTARTS changed hands several times through corporate acquisitions. After being owned by Nestlé for many years, the brand was sold to Ferrero Group in 2018 as part of a massive acquisition of Nestlé's U.S. confectionery business. Today, SweeTARTS is managed under the Ferrara Candy Company, which is a subsidiary of the global Italian firm Ferrero. Manufacturing for the North American market is primarily conducted in specialized candy production facilities in the United States.
