A.1. Sauce has a rich history dating back to early 19th-century England, where it was reportedly created by Henderson William Brand, a chef for King George IV. The King supposedly proclaimed it 'A.1.', giving the sauce its iconic name. While it was originally a British staple, the brand was later brought to America where it became synonymous with steak sauce.
Today, A.1. is manufactured primarily in the United States. Although it originated in the UK, the brand has undergone several ownership changes through corporate mergers in the food industry. It is currently owned and managed by the Kraft Heinz Company, which was formed following the 2015 merger of Kraft Foods and H.J. Heinz. In the United States, it is distributed by International Gourmet Specialties LLC, a subsidiary of the parent corporation based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
