Gatorade is arguably the most recognizable name in the sports nutrition industry, originally formulated in 1965 at the University of Florida to help athletes replenish liquids and electrolytes. This specific powder format allows for a customizable electrolyte solution, maintaining the brand's core purpose of hydration and performance enhancement.
Today, the brand is a cornerstone of the PepsiCo beverage portfolio. While it was invented in a university lab and early commercialization was handled by the Stokely-Van Camp company, it was eventually acquired by the Quaker Oats Company in 1983. In 2001, PepsiCo acquired Quaker Oats, bringing Gatorade under its global umbrella.
Manufacturing for Gatorade products, including the powder mix, occurs across a vast network of facilities. While a significant portion of the production is centered in the United States to serve the North American market, PepsiCo utilizes regional manufacturing hubs worldwide to meet global demand, ensuring the product is available in nearly every major international market.
