El Águila is a historic Spanish beer brand founded in Madrid in 1900 by Augusto Comas y Blanco. For much of the 20th century, it was one of the leading beer brands in Spain. The brewery became a symbol of industrial Madrid, particularly its factory in the Delicias neighborhood.
In 1984, the international brewing giant Heineken N.V. acquired a significant stake in the company. In the early 2000s, Heineken decided to phase out the El Águila name in favor of the 'Amstel' brand to unify its portfolio. However, due to its deep nostalgic connection with Spanish consumers, Heineken relaunched the El Águila brand in 2019, focusing on a more artisanal and unfiltered (sin filtrar) image. Today, the product is primarily manufactured in Heineken's facilities within Spain, such as those in Madrid, Valencia, or Seville, under the ownership of Heineken España, a subsidiary of the Dutch multinational.
