Brooklyn Brewery's Defender IPA is a prominent Golden IPA originally born from the craft beer movement in New York City. The brand was founded in 1988 by Steve Hindy and Tom Potter in Brooklyn, New York, and has since become a global icon of American craft brewing. While the heart of its operations remains in the United States, its expanding global footprint has led to production arrangements in various international markets to ensure freshness and reduce carbon footprints.
The brand's ownership reflects the consolidation of the global beer industry. While the founders and management retain a degree of independence, the Kirin Holdings Company of Japan acquired a significant minority stake (approximately 24.5%) in 2016. Furthermore, Brooklyn Brewery maintains a deep strategic partnership with the Carlsberg Group, which handles the distribution and, in several European and Asian markets, the local contract manufacturing of their beers. This complex structure allows the brand to maintain its craft identity while leveraging the logistics and production capabilities of some of the world's largest beverage conglomerates.
