Milk Duds are a classic American confectionery treat consisting of chewy caramel nuggets coated in a chocolate-flavored candy coating. The brand's unique name was born out of a failed attempt to create a perfectly round candy; because the equipment consistently produced misshapen pieces, the creator dubbed them 'duds,' but found the 'milk' portion of the recipe so high-quality that the dual name stuck.
Today, Milk Duds are primarily manufactured in the United States, specifically in Robinson, Illinois. This facility has historically been the hub for various classic caramel and chocolate-based snacks.
The brand has undergone several ownership changes since its inception in Chicago. Originally created by Hoffman and Company in 1928, it moved through several corporate hands including Beatrice Foods and Leaf, Inc. Since 1996, the brand has been under the stewardship of The Hershey Company, one of the largest and most recognizable chocolate manufacturers in the world. Hershey continues to be the ultimate owner, managing the brand from their global headquarters in Pennsylvania.
