TIDAL is a high-fidelity music streaming service originally launched in 2014 by the Norwegian public company Aspiro. The service differentiates itself in the competitive digital media market by focusing on lossless audio quality and high-definition music videos, appealing to audiophiles and serious music enthusiasts. Its history is marked by a high-profile relaunch in 2015 after being acquired by Project Panther Bidco Ltd., a company led by American rapper Jay-Z, who positioned it as the first artist-owned streaming platform.
Over the following years, the brand underwent significant ownership changes as it sought to scale. In 2017, the American telecommunications giant Sprint (now part of T-Mobile) purchased a 33% stake. However, the most definitive shift occurred in 2021 when the financial technology company Block, Inc. (formerly Square, Inc.) acquired a majority stake. Today, TIDAL operates as a key component of Block's ecosystem, integrating creative artist services with financial tools, while continuing to serve millions of users globally from its primary headquarters in New York and Oslo.
