Founded in 1936 by Tuomas Vohlonen, the company revolutionized the industry by inventing a mass-production method for liquid-filled compasses. While many high-tech electronics brands outsource their entire production, Suunto maintains a significant manufacturing presence in Finland. Historically, most of its flagship watches and dive products have been designed and handcrafted at its headquarters in Vantaa, Finland. However, some components and entry-level models may be sourced or manufactured in other international locations, reflecting a modern global supply chain.

Ownership of Suunto has shifted in recent years as the brand evolved within the sports technology market. Originally a Finnish independent company, it was acquired by Amer Sports in 1999. In 2022, Suunto was sold to Liesheng, a Chinese technology company specializing in wearable electronics. This acquisition by Liesheng aims to leverage the parent company's R&D capabilities in smart technology while maintaining Suunto’s Finnish identity and design excellence.
