The HGST Touro Mobile is a portable external hard drive designed for data storage and backup. The HGST brand has a complex history, originating as Hitachi Global Storage Technologies following Hitachi's acquisition of IBM's hard disk drive division in the early 2000s. Based in Japan originally through its Hitachi roots and the United States through its IBM heritage, the brand has been a major player in the storage industry for decades.
In 2012, Western Digital (WD) acquired HGST. Following the acquisition, Western Digital operated HGST as a subsidiary for several years before eventually phasing out the HGST brand name in favor of the unified Western Digital brand. While the branding on this specific device reflects the HGST name, the ultimate ownership lies with Western Digital, a global leader in data infrastructure based in California. Manufacturing for these consumer-level storage products is primarily located in China, as indicated on the product label.
