Norton is a globally recognized brand in the cybersecurity sector, synonymous with computer protection and internet security. Originally developed by Peter Norton Computing, the software became a cornerstone of the consumer digital security market following its acquisition by Symantec Corporation in 1990. Over decades, it evolved from basic antivirus utilities to comprehensive security suites including VPNs, password managers, and identity theft protection.
In recent years, the brand has undergone significant corporate restructuring. In 2019, Symantec sold its enterprise security business, and the remaining consumer company rebranded as NortonLifeLock. In 2022, a major merger between NortonLifeLock and the Europe-based cybersecurity firm Avast was completed, leading to the creation of Gen Digital Inc. This new parent company now oversees a portfolio of leading consumer brands including Norton, Avast, LifeLock, Avira, and AVG, positioning it as a dominant force in the global digital safety landscape.
