König Ludwig Dunkel is a traditional Bavarian dark lager with deep historical roots. The brand belongs to the König Ludwig GmbH & Co. KG Schlossbrauerei Kaltenberg, which is famously headed by Prince Luitpold of Bavaria, a descendant of the royal House of Wittelsbach that ruled Bavaria for centuries and issued the famous Bavarian Purity Law (Reinheitsgebot) of 1516.

The beer is primarily brewed at the Schlossbrauerei Kaltenberg in Fürstenfeldbruck, Bavaria, and as well as through partnerships at other sites such as Holstenbrauerei in northern Germany. In terms of corporate structure, the brand is managed as a joint venture between the royal family's company and the Warsteiner Group (Warsteiner Brauerei Haus Cramer KG).
