HERE WeGo is a prominent navigation service and mapping application with deep roots in the evolution of digital cartography. The brand's origin traces back to NAVTEQ, an American company founded in 1985 that specialized in digital maps. Over the decades, the technology was acquired by Nokia and rebranded as maps, eventually becoming Nokia Maps and then HERE.
Today, the platform is owned by a consortium of major automotive manufacturers and investment firms, moving away from its previous mobile-hardware-centric ownership. While the software development occurs across various global tech hubs, its primary physical and corporate presence remains in Europe. The brand changed hands significantly in 2015 when a group of German automakers bought it from Nokia to ensure the independence of autonomous driving and mapping data.
