Liberté is a historic dairy brand that originated in Montreal, Canada, in 1936. Founded by the Kander families, it began as a specialized kosher dairy producer before expanding into the broader yogurt market. Today, the brand is widely recognized for its high-protein Greek-style yogurt products.
The brand has undergone significant ownership changes. In 2021, General Mills completed the sale of its European operations of Yoplait and the Liberté brand rights in Europe to Sodiaal, a leading French dairy cooperative. While General Mills retains the brand in North America, the European operations shown in this context (marketed in Ireland via SuperValu) are managed by Sodiaal. Consequently, manufacturing typically occurs in regional facilities across Europe and North America to serve local markets.
