Ginger root is a flowering plant, Zingiber officinale, whose rhizome is widely used as a spice and a folk medicine. Unlike processed consumer goods, fresh ginger is an agricultural commodity harvested globally. It is indigenous to Maritime Southeast Asia and was likely domesticated first by Austronesian peoples.
Today, the production of ginger is highly decentralized. India is currently the world leader in ginger production, followed by China, Nigeria, and Indonesia. Other significant exporters include Brazil, Peru, and Thailand. Because it is a raw agricultural product, it does not have a single 'brand' or 'ultimate owner' in the traditional corporate sense, as it is farmed by thousands of independent growers and distributed via various global supply chains. When found in supermarkets, it is often sold under generic labels or distributor-specific private brands.
