Schweppes is one of the world's most historic beverage brands, famously founded in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1783 by Johann Jacob Schweppe. He was the first person to develop a practical method for carbonating water on a commercial scale, effectively inventing the modern soft drink industry.
Today, the ownership and manufacturing of Schweppes is highly fragmented globally. In continental Europe (including Spain and Portugal, where this 'Tónica' variant is popular) and parts of Africa, the brand is owned by the Suntory Group through its subsidiary Suntory Beverage & Food Europe. In other regions like North America, it is managed by Keurig Dr Pepper, while in many other territories including the UK and India, it is owned and distributed by The Coca-Cola Company. Because of this complex licensing, the product is manufactured in numerous countries according to the regional owner's distribution network.
