Aquila is a premium brand of still spring water, famously marketed as 'První Voda' (First Water) in Central Europe, particularly in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The water is sourced from the pristine underground springs in the Doupov Mountains near Karlovy Vary. It is highly regarded for its low mineral content, making it suitable and recommended for infants (baby water).
The brand was established by the Mattoni family, specifically Heinrich Mattoni, who founded the company in 1873. Over the decades, the brand became a cornerstone of the Czech beverage industry. Today, it is part of the Mattoni 1873 group (formerly Karlovarské minerální vody), which has grown into the leading distributor of non-alcoholic beverages in Central Europe.
The current ultimate owner is the Pasquale family, through their holding structures. Mattoni 1873 remains headquartered in the Czech Republic, but the ownership reflects a strong Italian heritage via the Pasquale family who revitalized the brand in the 1990s. The group now manages many international brands in the region, including Pepsi and Schweppes, while keeping Aquila as its flagship domestic spring water.
