Marabou is an iconic Swedish chocolate brand established in 1916 by Norwegian chocolatier Johan Throne Holst. The name 'Marabou' was chosen because the brand's original intended name, Freia, was already registered in Sweden; the company instead adopted the name of the stork (Marabou) featured on the Freia logo. This specific product is a collaboration featuring crunchy pieces of Biscoff, the famous caramelized biscuit originally created by Jan Boone Sr. in Belgium in 1932.
Most Marabou chocolate tablets are manufactured at the specialized production facility in Upplands Väsby, Sweden, which has been the brand's primary hub since the 1970s. However, as part of a global snacking giant, some components or variations may involve international supply chains.
Historically, Marabou was acquired by Kraft Foods in 1993, which later spun off its snack division to form Mondelēz International. Today, Mondelēz International remains the ultimate owner of Marabou. Meanwhile, the Biscoff brand is owned by the Belgian company Lotus Bakeries, which remains largely family-owned. The two companies collaborate on cross-branded products like this chocolate bar to combine their respective expertise in chocolate and biscuits.
