The Octopus card is a reusable contactless stored-value smart card for making electronic payments in online or offline systems in Hong Kong. Launched in 1997, it was the first of its kind in the world and has since expanded to be used for transit, retail, and access control. Unlike many other global transit cards, the Octopus system has become a comprehensive micropayment system used by over 98% of the Hong Kong population.
Technologically, the cards utilize the Sony FeliCa RFID chip. While the system was developed specifically for the Hong Kong market, the physical production of the cards and the embedded chips often involves global supply chains, primarily involving Japanese technology and international electronics manufacturing facilities. Ownership of the card system is held by Octopus Holdings Limited, which is shared among the major transit operators of the territory.
The brand has remained a cornerstone of Hong Kong's smart city infrastructure. It remains under the ultimate ownership of the MTR Corporation and several other local transportation companies, ensuring that the system remains integrated with the city's infrastructure and public services.
