Hi-Tec Sports was founded by Frank van Wezel in Shoeburyness, England, in 1974. The brand's success began with the design of the first-ever high-performance squash shoe, later expanding into hiking boots and court sports. Hi-Tec is well-known for creating the lightweight Sierra Sneaker and the Altitude hiking boot series, which became staples in the outdoor industry.

While the brand has its roots in the United Kingdom, manufacturing has shifted over the decades to various hubs in Asia to scale production for global distribution. Currently, the brand is owned by Hi-Tec Sports International, which is a subsidiary of Cherokee Global Brands (now known as Apex Global Brands), an American brand management company based in the United States. This ownership structure allows the brand to maintain a presence in over 100 countries while leveraging global supply chains.
